Department of Statistics
Statistics was introduced as a subject in 1962, with the first class comprising 3 students only and classes in the subject at bachelor level commenced in 1964 with only 11 students.
The number of students opting to study statistics at both intermediate and bachelor level has increased significantly over the years on account of its wide application in various fields.
The department of statistics is involved in hiring part time faculty from within the country to enrich and diversily the resources of learning. Short courses are being designed in this regard, which will provide the students exposure to the use of statistical techniques in different fields. The first short course was held in March 2006.
In order to keep them updated regarding the latest work being done in various fields of Statistics and to develop contacts with foreign colleagues, members of the statistics department have been attending international conferences. Recently in December 2005, the Islamic Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) in Lahore, which was attended by faculty members, organized an international conference.

Head of Department's Message
Statistics has wide application in different fields and is a natural choice for students intending to pursue careers in financial institutions and planning and development fields. Keeping this in mind and innovative 4 years BS program has been launched, which not only provides the students with in-depth knowledge of the subject but also familiarizes them to the use of statistical tools in various real world problems, thus preparing students who are well equipped to face the challenges of the job market.

Our Mission
Statistics, the science of decision making under uncertainty, is driven by data. The mission of the statistical science, as a discipline, is to serve science and society through the development, understanding, abstraction, and communication of state-of-the art techniques for collecting, analyzing, and making inferences from data. It is an explosive time for statistics with no shortage of new and novel data types in need of theoretical and applied study. Statistics has been called an interdisciplinary science because statisticians enthusiastically reach out to all areas of science and engineering in the pursuit of interesting and important problems. The dramatic influence statistics has on science and society can be easily seen by watching how data-analytic methods developed in the context of a particular scientific field are adapted by other disciplines. For example, analysis of variance that grew out of agricultural field trails is now a foundational research methodology throughout science. Similarly, many time series techniques that were developed, applications are now essential tools in areas such as engineering, economics, and environmental sciences. The tradition of statisticians attacking important interdisciplinary problems started earlier this century with R. A. Fisher formalizing the concepts of random sampling and design of experiments. Since that time, statistics has become a major research discipline that fundamentally supports all experimental sciences.
The mission of the Statistics Department is to help students develop their intellect and faith, expand their understanding of the role of science in the objective, systematic pursuit of truth, demonstrate how sound statistical methodology strengthens scientific conclusions, cultivate the ability to understand and communicate the results from empirical research in an ethical manner, and develop and apply methods of modern statistical science. The department regularly sponsors special lectures and activities to enrich the academic life of the campus and the larger community. Department members share in the role of faculty governance through committee
participation at all levels within the University.
To succeed in this mission, we will:
- Offer the premier undergraduate educational experience to statistics majors that prepares them to pursue satisfying and productive careers and qualifies them to enter competitive graduate programs.
- Offer an applied statistics graduate program that prepares outstanding students for successful and productive careers.
- Provide superb teaching in general education and service courses to cultivate an understanding of the role of the scientific method in performing empirical research.
