LCWU - 1922 to 2007

Lahore College for Women University is one of the most prestigious institutions of Pakistan with a full time enrollment of about 6500 students.

The glorious academic values of this oldest premier post-graduate female institution have been shaped by its institutional history, which is spread over a span of 85 years.  Established in May 1922 as an Intermediate residential college, it was housed in a building on Hall Road, Lahore, with strength of 60 students, 25 of whom were boarders and 13 staff members. In 1950, the college with 600 students was shifted to the present building on Jail Road, which was originally a school known as Sir Ganga Ram High School and Teachers Training Centre.

It was affiliated with the University of the Punjab at under graduate levels in 18 subjects in 1922, at graduate level in 14 subjects in 1925, for post graduate classes in English in 1940 and for Honours classes in five subjects in 1949. B.Sc. classes started in 1955. Post-graduate classes in the subjects of Economics and Physics started in 1966, in Islamiat, Political Science and Psychology in 1979.

The year 1990 was a turning point in the history of the Institution. It was granted Administrative and Financial Autonomy on 1st August 1990, declared as a Degree-Awarding institution on 13th August 1999 and was elevated to the status of a Women University on 10th September 2002.

At the time of autonomy in 1990, there were Masters classes in only six subjects but now with the award of University status we are offering M.A./M.Sc. classes in 20 subjects along-with 4 years B.A.(Hons)/ B.S. (Hons) in 31 subjects and 4 years professional degree B.S. (Environmental Science), BFA (Graphic Design, Visual Arts), Business Administration, BS-CS, B.E. in Electronic and 5 years Phram-D. Besides this we are offering MS Leading to Ph.D. Programs in Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science Electronics, Physics, Political Science, Economics, Urdu, Punjabi and Fine Arts.

As one of the oldest female institutions of Pakistan and in the 86th year of its existence, the University has approximately 6,500 students on its rolls and a teaching faculty of more than 325 members. It admits students at the Intermediate, Degree, Master and Ph.D. levels.

The 21st century has brought a drastic revolution in science, which has completely transformed the world. Today sciences are exploring areas that defy imagination. Right from the beginning, Lahore College for Women University has been fulfilling the demand of the female students in the field of science, as this was the only institution offering science subjects at undergraduate level. This is evident from the fact that majority of the female doctors serving and retired have at some stage (F.Sc. or B.Sc.) studied at Lahore College. Since 1922 the college has proved its worth as the highest seat of learning for science subjects. At the moment Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Electronics, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Pharmacy are taught at Graduate and Master Levels in the faculty of Science.

Nobody can deny the significance of social sciences and liberal arts as they contribute in polishing the aesthetic sense of human beings and are essential for the development of disciplined persons leading to the formation of a healthy society. To fulfill the needs of such persons and to produce professional social scientists and artists, Lahore College for Women University has reached its goal of excellence.

The Department of English, at the age of 69, is the oldest post-graduate department of the University. Founded by Prof Mrs. U.K. Siraj-ud-din, it still is rooted in the traditions of commitment and academic excellence. Besides English, Urdu, Punjabi, Islamic Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Fine Arts, Pakistan Studies, Mass Communication and Gender and Development Studies are being offered at the master level. The graduates of Lahore College for Women University take their place in moral, intellectual and professional leadership and in all walks of national life. Among its alumni are an extra ordinary number of teachers, physicians, principals working in female colleges of Pakistan, and business executives etc.

Since the establishment of Lahore College for Women University, in September 2002, the University has tried its level best for improvement in Higher Education.
MoU with various national industries and linkages with foreign universities have been established in the field of Pharmacy, Electronics, Environmental Science, Fine Arts, Economics and Mass Communication.

In recognition of the contribution of LCWU, UNESCO/ISESCO Chair for Women in Science in Asian Region has been established in LCWU in December 2004 with Prof. Dr. Mrs. Bushra Mateen as Chairperson.

At intermediate level this constituent College of Lahore College for Women University is affiliated with the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Lahore for the purpose of curricula and examination.

This constituent college has proved to be a very fruitful nursery in providing women force for professional education in the province.
