The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Punjab, in collaboration with the Embassy of Ethiopia in Islamabad, hosted the Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue: Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy at a local hotel in Lahore, aimed at promoting green culture, innovation, and technology to effectively combat climate change. The event was graced by Punjab Housing and Urban Development Minister Bilal Yasin as Chief Guest, alongside Secretary Forest, Wildlife & Fisheries Department Muddassir Riaz Malik, DG PHA Naheed Gul Baloch, and FPCCI Vice President Zaki Ijaz. A high-level Ethiopian delegation led by H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, also joined, with participation from government officials, diplomats, climate experts, academia, youth, and civil society representatives from Pakistan. Department of Botany in collaboration with Department of Mass communication organized a panel discussion and tree plantation on Importance of plantation, Environment issue and our responsibilities. This tree plantation campaign was spearheaded by the Worthy Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sahiba, who promoted planting campaigns within province. Punjab. Chairman PHEC Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir joined as chief guest. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shagufta Naz encouraged students to plant trees for the betterment of environment. Director Aghaz-e -sahar foundation Mr. Abdul Baloch provided plantation support to conduct event. |

Fifth Annual Floral Art Competition
Floral Art and Horticulture Society will awarded more land for research,VC LCWU
9th March 2017:Lahore College for Women University’s Floral Art and Horticulture Society held fifth annual floral art competition. Fifty students from different departments displayed their artistic work in the competition which was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar. Dean of natural sciences Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, Chairperson Botany Department, Prof. Dr. Farah Khan, senior members of faculty and students were present in inaugural session.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar said terrorism is the biggest threat to Pakistan as economic prosperity could thrive only in the conditions of peace. She appreciated the flower decoration by students, saying that flowers were symbol of peace and they cast positive impact on thinking of a person.
She lauded efforts of LCWU’s Floral Art Society and Botany Department for organizing healthy competitions among the youth, adding that the event had encouraged the young generation of the varsity to exhibit their talent. VC announced to allocate more land for University’s Floral Art and Horticulture Society in the campus for research purposes.
Dept. of Botany LCWU, Wins 6 positions at University of Punjab
Botany Department got six positions in Spring Festival 2016 at Institute of Agricultural Sciences, University of Punjab on 15th March 2016. Students participated enthusiastically in this event and won first and third positions in Fresh flower arrangement, first in Dry flower arrangement, first and second positions in Salad Garnishing and third position in Landscaping. ( Zainab Mehboob, Lyqa Fatima, Tehmina Bashir, Anum Mushtaq, Faiza Anum, Zubaida Kahloon, Sidra Arooj, Noor ui Ain Shafiq, Sumera Mustafa, Kiran Khalid, Barira Akram, Mehtab Saeed, Zaiba khan, Ammara Tahir, Anees Tahir, Aqsa Bano, Soha Nadeem, Hafiza Faiza, Laiba Khalil ) were among the winners.
4th Annual Inter-university Floral Art Competition at Botany Dept. LCWU
Botany Dept. LCWU in collaboration with Botanical & Horticultural society of LCWU and Seasons Canola oil, organized the 4th Annual Interuniversity Floral Art Competition on March 10th 2016. This colorful event was successfully organized by Prof. Dr. Farah Khan as Chief Organizer. Different universities of Lahore (University of the Punjab, GCU, FC University and Gulberg College) participated in the event.
The students, using their creative skills, participated in all categories with great enthusiasm in all the four categories of competition i.e., Fresh Flower Arrangement, Dry Flower Arrangement, All Green Arrangement and Ikebana. The Competition was judged by three judges, Mrs Zahra Aslam (Member of World Association of Flower Arrangers), Mrs Zamurd Safdar (Advisor, Visual Arts and Culture, LCWU) and Mrs Yasmin Mudassar (Home Economics Dept, LCWU). Students of Deptt. of Botany, PU won first position in Ikebana while Student of Home Economics Deptt. LCWU was awarded first position in Fresh Flower Arrangement. Students from Deptt. of Botany LCWU, were successful in having first position in Dry Flower Arrangement and All green arrangement. Certificates were distributed among winners by Prof. Shireen Asad, Director Student Affairs, Lahore College for Women University, Lahore. Prof Dr Farah Khan presented the vote of thanks to all guests, participants , judges, faculty, students and staff of Botany Department for holding such a wonderful event.
Botanical Naming of Trees at Lahore Zoo
Botany department completed a project entitled “Botanical naming of trees located at Lahore Zoo" with the collaboration of Lahore Zoo Management, in a period of six months. Prof. Dr Farah Khan was the PI of this project. All these Trees (many of which are more than 150-200 years old), were decorated by the thin transverse slices of tree trunks (in the form of their name plates), showing the painted botanical and local nomenclature of the trees. The name of Botany Department LCWU is also written on these wooden plates as chief contributor of this project.
The Home Secretary and Director General, Wild Life also visited the zoo and appreciated the contribution of LCWU. Anyone can visit the Zoo and witness the outstanding contribution and name of Botany Department, LCWU on its trees.
Horticulture and its future aspects
An informative lecture was arranged by Department of Botany LCWU, Lahore on 27th June, 2014. The resource person was Prof. Dr. Adel A. Abul Soad from Horticulture Research Institute, Cairo University, Egypt. The title of the lecture was “Horticulture and its future aspects”.
Lecture started with the welcome address of Prof. Dr. Farah Khan, Chairperson Dept.of Botany LCWU, Lahore. After this president Botanical and Floriculture gave a short introduction of society and its overall progress. Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tahira Butter graced the event as chief guest.
Prof. Dr. Adel Ahmed Abul-Soad started his talk with the history of horticulture and explained its progress. He told about the details of Horticulture Research Institute, Cairo University, Egypt having 3000 PhDs and 5000 other staff members. They are working on different plants like strawberries, date palm, mango and grapes. He continued his talk by giving stress that plant tissue culture can be used as a research tool in applied techniques genomics, hybrid formation and gene transfer.
He explained that horticulture and crop culture are two entirely different fields and researchers should take care of those boundaries.
Poster Presentations
Prof. Dr. Farah Khan, Dr. Sumera Iqbal, Dr. Khajista Jabeen, Ms. Sana Khalid and their students had oral and poster presentations in different international conferences at Islamia University, Bahawalpur, University of Karachi and Punjab University, Lahore.
Floral Art Competition
Floral Art Competition was held on 27th of March 2014, under the banner of Botany Department, LCWU, Lahore in four categories namely, Fresh flower, dry flower, Ikebana and all green arrangements. Prof. Dr. Sabiha Mansoor, Vice Chancellor LCWU, Lahore inaugurated the competition. Awards were distributed by Guest of Honor, Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, Dean of Facullty of Natural Sciences. Judgments were made by Mrs Zamurd (Ex-HOD Fine Arts Dept. LCWU, Lahore), Malik Abid (Director of Floriculture Dept) and Ms. Suganuma Chizura (OISCA Japan).
Transgenic Plants in Perspectives of Microbiological Applications
A one day Seminar on “Transgenic Plants in Perspectives of Microbiological Applications” was organized by the Dept. of Botany in collaboration with the American Society for Microbiology” on 25th of February, 2014 in Lahore College for Women University.
Lecture by Mustansar Hussain Tarrar
A lecture by Mustansar Hussain Tarrar was also organized in collaboration of BB Chair and Department of Botany on civilization of CHINA. He was of the view that we can deeply understand the religion after having the true knowledge of culture and civilizations and when we understand the religion with its true roots we prosper just as Chinese civilization has done

A workshop in collaboration with NAYS (National Association of Young Scientists) was held in Department of Botany, LCWU, Lahore, on 28th of February, 2013
World Forest Day
A small educational and recreational tour was arranged on World Forest Day on 21st of March 2013 for students of BS and Ms of Botany major. Dr. Shabnam, Dr. Sumaira, Dr. Khajista were the staff members leading the students. Students were taken to the Jallo Park where they planted 300 plants in collaboration with Forest Department. The purpose of the tour was to develop interest of students in forestry, its conservational practices and need to plant new trees.
