Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities
Lahore College Women University (LCWU) closes its USAID – funded project “Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities”
(Lahore: April 10, 2017): Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) formally closed the project of “Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities. The project came to a close, successfully fulfilling the aims to encourage gender institutionalization through gender sensitization of students, faculty and non- teaching staff in public sector universities across Pakistan and mainstreaming gender in curriculum.
Dr. Nusra Inayat, Director Institute of Education welcomed the guests and gave a brief introduction of the project.
In her address as project manager, Dr. Asma Shahid Kazi, Faculty Incharge, Department of Professional Studies- IOE, highlighted the purpose and outcomes of the sub grant, which aimed to develop the prospective teachers’ sensitivity to students’ needs and interests. It also aimed to equip them with knowledge to safe guard their interests against gender based discrimination, harassment, violence and stereotyping. The event showcased the various activities through pictorials and testimonials of the beneficiaries of the project.
Dean Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences appreciated the work done and its significance. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar lauded the efforts of the program team in the successful execution of the project. She encouraged students and faculty to utilize their potential and contribute effectively for the betterment of the society. The ceremony was well attended Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments of LCWU and other universities, along with students of LCWU.
The event ended by a dua for the late Mohtarma Nigar Ahmed, founder Aurat Foundation.
This project is being implemented under the Gender Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation by the support of the American People through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the area of Lahore, Pakistan.
In the end a special dua was held for late Nigar Ahmed, a leading activist and founder of Aurat Foundation.
Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities
7th April 2017: Department of Professional Studies –IOE conducted five Gender Sensitization Workshops with Non-Teaching staff, LCWU, Lahore with the following aims:
Raising awareness towards gender sensitivity and related terms
Changing stereotypical behaviour
Instilling empathy into the views that we hold about our own and the other sex.
Treating our fellow humans with greater consideration and compassion.
Take steps to end gender discrimination, harassment and violence, particularly against women
The four hour workshops revolved around two main sessions, “Gender Sensitization and Awareness”, followed by “Gender Based Violence and its Prevention”. The participants were asked to relate various incidents from their own experience. The sessions were interactive, based on video based discussions, role play, and activities to create relevance and empathy. They were also introduced to some Pro Women laws.
The workshops were well attended by an assortment of participants ranging from attendants, naib qasids, lady security guards, lab attendants, clerks, gardeners, sanitary workers, cleaners etc.
Many of the participants commented that such issues should be raised more regularly and at a larger platform. One participant commented that he himself was uneducated but his daughter was doing M.Phil. They agreed to respect women, and not harass them. They also agreed that they should help women in their house chores. All of them felt that the workshop was beneficial and helped them focus on their stance towards the issues discussed.
The participants appreciated the workshop, the attitude of the trainers and the contents of the workshop.

The participants were first given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender terms and roles. They were then asked to express their views on gender stereotypes. In particular, they were asked what they conceive as gender discrimination and violence and then were explained about its facets. They then viewed the GEP documentary “Humari Betian”. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video, which encouraged participants to reflect on the events shown in the video, and their own experience with respect gender discrimination. The necessity of dialogue and partnership between the genders was emphasized. The importance of giving choice to women and giving them a voice in having an opinion was discussed. The issues discussed in the video were related to the students’ life and situation. The concept of division of labour and sharing of household chores between the genders was emphasized.
Outcomes:
It was highlighted that women may do the work of men, but not otherwise. The patriarchal mindset, and subservience of women was discussed. It was recommended to focus on effective education, necessary change in curricula and a sound upbringing to tackle the issues. The various aspects of gender based violence were also highlighted. Not giving women a chance was voiced as a kind of emotional violence.
Activity 2: Tutorial Session 7 Mujhay Beta Chahiye

Proceedings The participants were first given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender terms and roles. They were then asked to express their views on gender stereotypes. In particular, they were asked what they conceive as gender discrimination and violence and then were explained about its facets. They then viewed the GEP documentary “Mujhay Beta Chahiye”. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video to encourage participants to reflect on the events shown, and to share their own experience with respect to treatment of sons vs daughters. It highlighted that daughters are not an issue, but the societal pressures and dowry which pose a problem. Issues of inheritance were also discussed. It focused on effective education and upbringing to tackle the issues. It also discussed the issues of gender balance, gender preference and pressures and insistence of family and society on having a male child.
Outcome:
The documentary raised awareness to the injustices faced by women in day to day life, societal attitudes and behaviors which contribute to them, particularly when they don’t have male offspring. Participants had a healthy discussion on their own experiences related to the topic.
Activity 3: Tutorial Session 8 Marzi ki Shadi

The participants were first be given a simple quiz, Q/A session on simple gender terms, roles and elicit their views on gender stereotypes. After that there was a role play session on various aspects of the topic, such as approaching a girl, convincing parents, and parents reactions. They then viewed the GEP documentary “Marzi Ki Shadi”. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video, which encouraged participants to reflect on the topics discussed in the video, and their own experience with respect to love vs arranged marriage. Honour killing was also highlighted and women’s right to haq mehr and issues of dowry were also be discussed. Participants were encouraged to express their own experiences related to struggles of women in our society and share reflections.
Outcome:
The session discussed the victimization of women who choose their life partners, the reaction of parents, the social stigma and the resulting coping strategies. It discussed what are the norms set by the society, and how to break this cycle. Participants also discussed the ethical and moral code of conduct, and the rights of women while maintaining a progressive stance. There were six participant who were recently married, and they shared personal experiences. This allowed others to be more vocal.
Activity 4: Tutorial Session 9 on Nikkahnama

Proceedings:
The participants were first given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender terms and roles. They were then asked to express their views on gender stereotypes. In particular, they were asked what they conceive as gender discrimination and violence and then were explained about its facets. They then shown the video on Nikkahnama and Muslim Family Laws. They were then introduced to the terms and conditions of the Nikkahnama and showed how they could be used to adequately protect the rights of women. Various sections of the Nikahnama which are removed before the couple gets to see the document, such as a woman’s right to divorce her husband, were discussed. Other privileges including restricting a man’s right to divorce his wife and the opportunity for spouses to impose conditions on the marriage were discussed. Participants were encouraged to express their own experiences related to struggles of women in our society and share reflections.
Outcome:
The students and faculty expressed their limited awareness about the nikkahnama, and aspects which make them feel exploited. The participants opined that by educating ourselves about these matters we will be able to solve many issues. The speakers said that instead of starting implementing their rights for themselves first, they should start with their brothers.
Activity 5: Tutorial Session 10 Women in Media

Proceedings:
The participants were first given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender terms and roles. They were then asked to express their views on gender stereotypes. In particular, they were asked what they conceive as gender discrimination and violence and then were explained about its facets. They then viewed the GEP documentary “Women in Media”. The show discussed how women spend time on the electronic media, and the portrayal of society and the victimized woman in drama serials. It also discussed stereotypical roles of women portrayed in media. It also highlighted how sexual harassment against women is hyped as breaking news on media. It also discussed issues of media ethics, and its role in transformation, particularly in a developing nation like ours. Role of Women in Media was discussed. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video, which encouraged participants to reflect on the events shown in the video, and their own experience with respect to gender discrimination.
Outcome:
The participants highlighted that women should not be stereotyped by media, and there should be a realistic representation rather than a sensational one. They also shared their own experiences and reflections. They also said that women who adopt media as a profession are not respected by the society, which should be changed.
Raising Awareness to end Gender Based Violence (International Day of Social Work)
Date: March 21, 2017
Venue: Bio Tech Conference Room, LCWU, Lahore
Purpose: The participants were first given a simple quiz, on their views of social work. They were asked as to what they perceive as gender based violence and its facets. The guest speaker, Dr Bushra Hameedur Rahman then highlighted the background and significance of International Day of Social Work. Participants were then introduced the concepts of care, which was linked with self, family, community and environment. The role of women as a vital element of society was emphasized. The talk focused on the responsibility of each individual, and their conscious will and effort to improve their surroundings. It is not necessary to carry out a movement, or work in an NGO to make a change. She linked social work with personal development, elucidated how we can contribute effectively to the community and society, even in our own personal capacity. In the end a national song “Main bhi Pakistan hoon” was played to emphasize unity and nationhood.
Outcome: It is expected that by being introduced to the concept of personal development and women empowerment in our social context so that the young girls learn to manage themselves personally and socially. The participants were responsive to the presentation, and many of them voiced that they have a direction and vision to follow in their future.
They also agreed that women need to be aware of their rights and role in the making of a society.
Raising Awareness to end Gender Based Violence (International Women’s Day)

Purpose: The participants were first be given a simple quiz, Q/A session on simple gender terms, roles and elicit their views on gender stereotypes. In particular they were asked what they conceive to as gender based violence and its facets. They then viewed a Mime on “Violence against Women”. Women empowerment addresses the need to improve the social, economic, political, educational, equal gender rights and spiritual strength of the women all over the world. The students were introduced to this through the mime on women empowerment showing dignity to the external and internal possessions of females and how they can emerge on the face of the world with no fear and self confidence.
Outcome: It is expected that that students will realize that the modern society needs to bring sociological empowerment among women to address the social and gender discrimination processes in the society. Women empowerment may solve lots of social issues as well as bring growth and development of the nation on right track.

The participants were first be given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender roles to elicit their views on gender stereotypes. They then viewed the first episode of GEP cartoon series “Main Aur Meray Dost”. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video, which encouraged participants to reflect on the events shown in the video, and their own experience related to bullying and harassment, particularly of females by males, treatment of the female child at home, parental biases and gender stereotypes in a simple, easy to relate manner.
The children in this school are not segregated on the basis of gender. They were able to identify and relate to some of the problems discussed, reflect on them, and understand that such behaviours are uncalled for and disapproved.
Outcomes:
Students expressed that they would not harass each other, protect each other’s things, and stand up for their friends. The girls also expressed how sometimes they are discriminated at home, and that they do the house chores. The class teachers felt that there should be sessions with the parents of the students as well, to dispel their preconceived notions about gender discrimination and stereotyping.
Activity 2: Tutorial Session 2 (Main Safar Main Hoon)

To get the students, and faculty members of Semester 4, Dept. of Professional Studies-IOE, LCWU acquainted with:

Struggle of Women in society
Prominent women and their achievement, worldwide and in the subcontinent
Role of various organizations to promote women’s rights
Proceedings
The students were shown the video Main Safar Main Hoon and introduced to the universal struggle faced by women, a timeline of how they fought for their rights and gained prominence, and the constant struggle they face even today. The participants were motivated to stand up for their rights, and not accept subservient roles in society.
The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video to encourage participants to reflect on:
the events shown in the video
Their own experience with respect to prominent females in the world and the subcontinent
The role of various organizations to promote women’s rights etc.
Participants were encouraged to express their own experiences related to struggles of women in our society and share reflections
Outcome:
Students expressed that they need to be more aware of the work being done for women in Pakistan. They also said that it is women need to rise up to protect other women.

The participants were first given a simple quiz, Q/A session on gender terms, roles and elicit their views on gender stereotypes. In particular they will be asked what they conceive as gender based violence and its facets. They then viewed the GEP documentary “Social Media: A New Concept of Violence against Women”. The facilitators had prepared pre planned set of questions related to the video, which encouraged participants to reflect on the events shown in the video, and their own experience with respect to use of social media, cyber bullying and harassment, sharing pictures and other content on the internet/facebook, the accusations from family and society etc.
They were shown the case history of Komal, and then be encouraged to share their experiences and reflections. Maintaining privacy and not leaving digital footprints was discussed. Students shared their own experiences on social media.
Outcome:
By being introduced to the concept of cyber bullying and harassment, the young girls understood the need to maintain privacy and the code of conduct for using social media. However students felt that parents need to be given awareness session on social media as well.

The children were from elementary school classes. During viewing, some boys discomfort was visible. Some remained adamant that they tease out of friendship. A healthy discussion ensued on what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

Students expressed that they would not harass each other, protect each other’s things, and stand up for their friends. The girls also expressed how sometimes they are discriminated at home, and that they do the house chores.
The class teachers felt that there should be more sessions with these children, and that such activities will help promote good behavior and reflective thinking in students, particularly to dispel their preconceived notions about gender discrimination and stereotyping.

Raising Awareness to end Gender Based Violence (National Women’s Day)
Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) is implementing the project of “Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities.” As a part of the project, on 28th February 2017, Department of Professional Studies organized an activity for raising awareness to gender based violence by commemorating the National Women’s Day with staff and students of Institute of Education. The event highlighted the significance of National Women’s Day. Students and faculty were familiarized with types and causes of violence, particularly school based gender related violence, and some gender related terms through interactive sessions. Ms. Shagufta Moghal anchored the event. A student documentary film on “Developing Self Reliance and Self Confidence in Transgenders” was viewed and a discussion commenced on the basic premise of the theme. The sessions were led by ACP award winning semester VIII students, Rukhsar Fatima, Aniqa Jamil, Amna Sarfaraz, Aqsa Saleem, Sajila Riaz, Mehak Rasheed and Mahnoor Mustafa Khan. Dr Asma Shahid Kazi concluded the session and all the participants unanimously agreed that the event was very thought provoking. Students were able to clarify their concepts on gender stereotypes, gender based violence, and gender myths.

Lahore College Women University (LCWU) launches its USAID – funded project “Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities”
(Lahore: February 21, 2017): Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) is implementing the project of “Institutionalization of Gender Sensitization and Gender Training Materials in Public Sector Universities.” Spanning over a period of seven months, the project aims to encourage gender institutionalization through gender sensitization of students, faculty and non- teaching staff in public sector universities across Pakistan and mainstreaming gender in curriculum. The purpose of the project is to encourage and develop students’ ability to raise questions, develop the prospective teachers’ sensitivity to students’ needs and interests, as well as integration of gender studies to increase sensitivity not only on matters of gender, but also on matters of class, race, and ethnicity.
In the welcome address as project manager, Dr. Asma Shahid Kazi, Faculty Incharge, Institute of Education, highlighted the purpose of the sub grant which aims to equip the target group on topics of Women’s rights and GBV, Gender concepts, Pro Women Laws, Cybercrime and its effect on Women, Breaking Stereotypes and Advocacy for women empowerment and ending violence against women.
Ms Mumtaz Mughal, Resident Director at Aurat Foundation, shared the vision and purpose of the organization and its commitment to improve the gender discrepancy prevalent in Pakistan through various projects. The Grant Cycle 12 B focuses specifically on strengthening gender equity of Public sector universities of Pakistan.
The ceremony was attended by, Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments along with more than hundred students of LCWU. In her address the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Uzma Quraishi appreciated the initiative of the project, and emphasized its importance and relevance as a positive step towards women empowerment. Respected Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar also graced the occasion with her presence.
The project would also facilitate in the establishment of resource center for dissemination of GEP information, education and communication materials, in addition to raising opportunities for student participation in research and co- curricular activities.

Akhuwat Clothes Bank Visit by B.Ed
Faculty members and students from B.Ed semesters VII and III went to the head office of Akhuwat in Township Lahore on a study visit. They were briefed about the initiation and activities being carried out by the organization. They also visited the Akhuwat Clothes Bank, a unique project in which the clothes are collected from the well-to-do families, repaired, washed / dry cleaned, packed and then given as a gift to the needy people. They also met the Khawaja Seras who were rehabilitated and employed in the Clothes Bank project by the organization The students avowed to undertake a clothes drive on Campus and contribute on an ongoing basis to assist in this noble cause. They also gave gifts of notebooks and stationary for the children of the tent school being run under the Akhuwat umbrella.
Akhuwat Book Bank/Kitab Ghar Project in Walled City Visit by B.Ed
Faculty members and selected students from B.Ed semester III visited the Wazir Khan Masjid in Walled City Lahore to volunteer in an upcoming library project being setup there by Akhuwat. Dr Amjad Saqib, founder and Executive Director of Akhuwat, and Mr Kamran Lashari, Director General Walled City Lahore briefed the students about all the possible projects in which they can volunteer. The students showed immense interest and keenness in the project and ensured complete commitment on their behalf.
Video Link Conference
Video link conference was arranged by the Department of Professional Studies-IOE on Dec 2 2015 in which the Renowned Peace Nobel Laureate Mrs. Tawakkol Karman broadcast her keynote lecture through video Conferencing on the theme of Human Rights and Women Empowerment. Faculty members and Ph.D scholars from Institute of Education attended the session.
Mrs. Tawakkol Addel-Salam Karman, first Muslim Arab lady Noble Peace Prize recipient asserted that women should struggle for comprehensive solutions to build a society based on peace, democracy, rule of law, justice, equality and freedom. They should also raise their voice against injustices, corruption, illiteracy, poverty in the society. She urged that the governments, institutions, political parties and laws should guarantee active participation of women in all walks of life.
This video conferencing was organized by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad and Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences in Pakistan (IUCPSS).
Visit of Dr. Fathi El Ashry and Ms Shahida Maheen, Pakistan Reading Project/USAID/HEC
Dr. Fathi El Ashry and Miss Shahida Maheen Pakistan Reading Project/USAID, visited Department of Professional Studies IOE, to monitor course changes and observe practicum students from B.Ed Semester III and VII on 17 November 2015. They also took interviews from the students and faculty members who are teaching the revised courses and content area courses of “Reading Instruction and Assessment Integration”.
International Study Visits (ISV)
Selection of Rukhsar Fatima for International Study Visits (ISV) as Part of the Global Active Citizens Programme
Rukhsar Fatima from Department of Professional Studies –IOE, (Sem V, B.Ed Hons) was selected for the British Council International Study Visits (ISV) as part of the global Active Citizens programme for the year 2015-2016. She was the group leader for the ACP project “Developing Self Reliance and Self Confidence in Transgenders”.
In an ISV, 25 and 30 Active Citizens from at least five different countries and a wide range of communities for a week to take part in a mixture of discussions and presentations, workshops and visits on topics relevant to the Active Citizens Learning Journey. It aims to increase understanding of the power of global connections and to develop skills to establish global networks engaged in social development. Aniqa Jamil, Amna Sarfaraz, Aqsa Saleem, Sajila Riaz, Mehak Rasheed and Mahnoor Mustafa Khan were other group members of the ACP project.

The Education Department has taken an initiative to organize a summer holiday program for LCWU faculty kids commenced from 2nd July, 2012 to 13th July, 2012. It was a two weeks program for the children aging 4-12 years. A total of thirty kids were enrolled in the program. The basic purpose of this program was to organize a fun based learning experience for children.
This two weeks summer program provided children with some interesting activities in Mathematics, Science and Art & Craft. Children enjoyed solving Math riddles and doing some really interesting Science experiments. But the part which they most loved was Art & Craft. They liked making and decorating pencil box from Popsicle sticks, they enjoyed making flowers from formic sheet, and there were some other activities which made them fall in love with art and craft.
Apart from these activities there was a movie day in which they saw a movie named, “The Smurfs”. They were so excited watching movie with their friends on big screen. Kids played their favorite water games on last day. They were so attached with their friends and teachers that they wanted to increase the duration of the program.
